IB ARTS DAY —— students displayed their Action Painting

Date: January 27 , 2024 04:20:30 View ()

For the Fall 2023 Arts Day, IB DP1 students learned about Action Painting; a style that involves spontaneous application of paint on the canvas by dripping, throwing, and splashing, etc. Some action paintings were so large they had to be painted on the floor just like these. Before painting, students learned about Jackson Pollock (the style’s creator), his technique and process, and the secret: a material understanding of paint viscosity. Other notable artists who practiced this style were Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and the IB class of 2025! Nearly all 57 IB DP1 students participated.

The paintings were displayed in the 7th Floor hallway of the Aspirations Building where seating was set up for passersby to rest and enjoy the artwork. Students and faculty from both the National and International Departments came to experience the paintings. The community response was very positive.

Mr. Baylon, National Program Oral English Teacher, shared his response: “This work, for me, evokes the concept of boundaries and limits. Conflict, both inner and outer, arises from the messy process of drawing a line to preserve autonomy.”

Mr. Oluwaseyi, Cambridge A-Levels teacher, shared his response: “In awe of the mesmerizing art piece at the IB Art Day! The energy, focus, and creativity radiating from this work are truly inspiring. It's a testament to the wild mind power that fuels artistic brilliance. Kudos to the artist for such a captivating masterpiece!  #IBArtDay #CreativityUnleashed”

Mr. Vongphakdy, IB Visual Arts Teacher, said, “Art is good when it’s seen, better when it’s experienced, and best when it brings the community together. The students got it right!”
